Sakedokoro Teppan Sukkun
A Famous Restaurant Hidden in the Downtown Area That Is Loved by Locals
Hidden in the bustling downtown area of Nagarekawacho, Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, this cozy teppanyaki restaurant is loved by many regulars and business travelers alike. The restaurant's signature original okonomiyaki, "Sukkun-yaki," is made with two soft-boiled eggs, carefully seasoned to enhance the natural sweetness of the vegetables. Each okonomiyaki is meticulously grilled to perfection, ensuring a crispy texture for the noodles. Experience the one-of-a-kind flavors found only here. Another must-try dish is the restaurant's original pizza, baked on the teppan using okonomiyaki batter—a particularly popular choice among female guests. The owner's top recommendation is the miso soup made with aburakasu (crispy fried beef intestines). This flavorful ingredient, created by slowly frying beef small intestines, is used in various dishes, allowing diners to fully savor its rich, umami-packed taste (umami refers to a savory, meaty flavor that is considered the fifth basic taste alongside sweet, sour, salty, and bitter).

Nostalgic, Old-School Okonomiyaki
Founded in 1962, "Mori" is a long-established okonomiyaki shop that continues to serve the simple, nostalgic flavors of Hiroshima’s beloved soul food. The restaurant is even said to attract visits from celebrities. One of its distinctive features is that the egg topping on the okonomiyaki continues to gently cook on the teppan as you eat. Though the shop was renovated in May 2024, the retro charm of the Showa era remains. Takeout orders are served in breathable wooden trays (kyogi) wrapped in newspaper, preserving the authentic atmosphere of days gone by.
