A Distinguished Shrine Cherished as the Ichinomiya of Etchu

Located within Takaoka Kojō Park in Takaoka, Toyama—renowned for cherry blossoms in spring and brilliant foliage in autumn—"Imizu Shrine, the Grand Guardian Shrine of Etchu" has long been revered as the Ichinomiya of the region. The enshrined deity is Ninigi-no-Mikoto, affectionately known locally as Futagami no Kami, associated with blessings such as abundant harvests, harmonious relationships, and divine guidance that leads the way. Highlights throughout the grounds include seasonal floral temizu displays, the approximately 400-year-old sacred "Yaebeni-ume" tree, and the "First Torii Gate," specially bestowed from the Grand Shrine of Ise. A wide selection of protective amulets and monthly goshuin stamps is also available, drawing many visitors who wish to commemorate their visit.

It is a Shinmei torii gate with a width of approximately 6.5m and a width of approximately 3.8m. The dignified and solemn torii gate warmly welcomes worshipers.

Monthly Stamps That Change as the Seasons Change

The shrine office distributes a wide variety of Goshuin stamps throughout the year, including a variety of Goshuin stamps with floral designs that change monthly and seasonal changes, "Kiri-e Goshuin stamps" with a design of the Tanabata night sky, and special ones with "One Grain Man's Day" stamps. It's fun every time I visit, including stamps. Many cute charms shaped like various wishes are also popular.

The Once-in-a-decade Ceremony of the Divine Procession

The Once-in-a-decade Ceremony of the Divine Procession

In 2025, the "Gosenza 150th Anniversary Festival" marks 150 years since the enshrined deity, "Futagami-no-Kami," was transferred from Mt Futagami—its traditional sacred site—to the former castle grounds. The centerpiece of the festival is the "Goshinkō," a grand ritual held once every ten years in which the deity symbolically "returns home." The celebration unfolds with a vibrant procession of children in traditional attire and dedicated lion-dance performances, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the precincts.

The enshrined deity "Ninigi no Mikoto" is the main character of the myth of the descendant of the Tenson, who is said to have descended from Takamagahara to Hyuga Province after receiving orders from "Amaterasu Omikami."

  • A Sanctuary and Worship Hall Preserving the Grace of Ancient Architecture

Although the shrine’s roof is now finished with copper plates, it once featured a stately kokerabuki cypress-shingle roof. Its refined linear form preserves elements of ancient shrine architecture inspired by "Yuiitsu Shinmei-zukuri," the style seen at the Grand Shrine of Ise. The calligraphy on the long plaque at the front was written by Lord Maeda Narinaga of the Kaga Domain.
