Six Generations of Oden in Asakusa Through Earthquakes and War

Founded in 1915, "Asakusa Oden Otafuku" is a long-established oden restaurant in Asakusa, Tokyo, a popular destination for travelers from Japan and abroad. For more than a century, it has preserved its traditions and remained a favorite among local residents.

Time-Honored Flavors and Hospitality Carried on Through Generations

Founded as "Otafuku" (お多福) on the grounds of Tenryuzan Hozenji Temple in Osaka, the restaurant moved to Asakusa, Tokyo, in 1915, during an economic boom. With the wish to "bring greater happiness to more people," it changed the written form of its name to "Otafuku" (大多福), using the kanji 大, meaning "large." Having survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and the devastation of war, it has preserved its traditions for more than a century, serving time-honored flavors with warm hospitality—a fitting place to round out a day of sightseeing in Asakusa.

"Individual Serving" Course with Oden and Seasonal Japanese Dishes

Centered on an assortment of the restaurant's specialty oden, "Individual Serving" also includes seasonal Japanese dishes such as sashimi, meat dishes, and chawanmushi. The oden assortment is served on a tabletop burner, keeping it piping hot while bringing out the aroma of the kombu and bonito broth. The assortment and other dishes vary with the season and party size, offering something new with each visit. It is well suited for a meal while sightseeing in Asakusa, dining with someone special, or celebrating an anniversary.

  • "Hot Pot" Course Shared Around a Tabletop Pot

Choose your favorite oden from the large copper pot in front of the counter seats, or share a tabletop pot with friends. Gathering around the steaming pot naturally gets the conversation flowing.

  • An Extensive Selection Beyond Oden

Beyond oden, the menu offers a wide range of dishes, including sashimi, grilled fish, seasonal specialties, rice dishes, and desserts. A broad selection of sake and shochu is also available, making it easy to choose dishes and drinks to suit the occasion.

"Tsumire" - Minced Sardine Balls

"Tsumire" preserves the traditional flavor of "Asakusa Oden Otafuku" unchanged since its founding. Made with sardines and no other main ingredient, fresh sardines are cleaned, cut into pieces, and ground into a paste to create a soft, fluffy texture. As the name "tsumire" derives from "tsumi-ire," meaning to pinch off and drop in, portions of the sardine paste are dropped into the pot and left to slowly absorb the broth. Simmered in the restaurant's secret kombu and bonito broth, the "tsumire" develops an even deeper umami flavor.

Must-try signature dish

  • "Assorted Sashimi"

The "Assorted Sashimi" features seasonal seafood sourced that day and arranged by skilled chefs. Enjoy it with sake and the restaurant's specialty oden for an even fuller taste of Japanese cuisine.

  • "Simmered Beef Tendon"

"Simmered Beef Tendon" is slowly cooked in a sweet-savory sauce, bringing out the beef's rich umami and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. It pairs especially well with sake, shochu, and other alcoholic drinks.

The secret broth has been continuously replenished and preserved since the restaurant's founding. Made from kombu and bonito flakes and seasoned with light soy sauce, it is neither Kanto- nor Kansai-style, but a recipe unique to "Asakusa Oden Otafuku." Longtime regulars love it so much that they say, "I'd drink the broth on its own."
