A Must-See Treasure House for History Fans That Tells the Story of Yonezawa

Located within the grounds of Keishoden at the former inner citadel site of Yonezawa Castle and adjacent to Uesugi Shrine, this museum preserves valuable cultural treasures associated with Uesugi Kenshin, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Naoe Kanetsugu, and Uesugi Harunori, including historical documents, arms and armor, calligraphy, paintings, ceramics, and lacquerware. Magnificent suits of armor and swords used during the Sengoku period can be viewed at close range, offering a vivid glimpse into the era. The name Keishoden derives from the phrase "Keiko Shokon" in the preface to the Kojiki, expressing the idea of studying the past to illuminate the present and guide the future. The collection provides a meaningful introduction to the history and cultural legacy of the Uesugi clan.

A Valuable Historic Building Designed by Chuta Ito

The Keishoden Hall, which has been designated a nationally registered tangible cultural property, opened in 1923 (Taisho 12) as a treasure hall when Uesugi Shrine was rebuilt. It was designed by Ito Chuta, a professor emeritus at Tokyo Imperial University and a native of Yonezawa City, Yamagata. It is a representative early example of a fire-resistant concrete museum building.
