A Shrine Dedicated to Aizu Domain Founder Masayuki Hoshina

"Hanitsu Shrine," founded in 1675, enshrines Masayuki Hoshina, the first lord of the Aizu domain, along with successive Aizu lords. The original buildings were lost in the Boshin War and reconstructed in 1880, and the grounds, with nearly 400 years of history, convey a solemn atmosphere. The name "Hanitsu" reflects the idea of a lord who mastered the principles of all things, and the site draws visitors interested in Aizu’s history. The torii gate is white, reflecting Masayuki’s integrity, and the setting is complemented by seasonal scenery, including cherry blossoms in spring, fresh green maple leaves in summer, and autumn foliage.

The Sacred Inner Sanctuary Where Masayuki Hoshina Rests

Continuing north along the cedar-lined path extending from beside the main hall and the approach paved with rounded stones leads to the inner sanctuary, where the nationally designated historic site "Aizu Domain Matsudaira Family Cemetery" is located. Passing through the shrine gate bearing the Aizu Mitsu-aoi crest, the emblem of the Aizu domain, reveals a slightly raised mound said to contain the coffin of Lord Masayuki.

The "Hanitsu Reishin Monument," standing within the grounds, is a stone monument inscribed with the life and achievements of Masayuki Hoshina. Rising to about 7.6 meters, it rests on a base featuring the mythical creature "Hiki," whose face was originally oriented south toward Lake Inawashiro but, according to legend, was turned north toward Mount Bandai because it would attempt to walk toward the lake at night.
