Kumamoto Castle Inari Shrine
A shrine affectionately known as "White Beard"
Kumamoto Castle Inari Shrine, located about a 3-minute walk from the Kumamoto City Tram Kumamoto Castle/Shiyakusho-mae stop, was built in 1588 by Kato Kiyomasa as a deity to protect the castle town when he visited Kumamoto. The enshrined deity, Shirahige Daimyojin, has been loved by people for over 400 years, nicknamed "Shirahige-san," as a god of business prosperity and family safety. It is a power spot in Kumamoto City that enshrines 13 gods, has a "Wheel of Wisdom" and a "Fuku Shamoji" that exorcises misfortune, and is said to bring blessings such as success in entrance exams, good relationships, and good health. The unique "Good Luck Water Fortune" is popular. The Hatsuuma Festival, which celebrates the arrival of spring, is crowded with many worshipers seeking good fortune.
