Sueyama Shrine overlooks Arita Town, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. The main deity enshrined is "Shinaya Wake no Mikoto", who is loved by the locals as the "god of pottery" for the prosperity of Arita ware. The grounds have a beautiful porcelain torii gate with arabesque patterns, guardian dogs, large water bottles, and tamagaki, all of which are unique to a pottery town. You can enjoy the beautiful colors of each season: cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, roses of Sharon in summer, and colored leaves in autumn.

A Porcelain Guardian Dog That Reproduces the Colors of the Meiji Era

The porcelain guardian dogs of Sueyama Shrine, which have a beautiful pair of unique shapes and eye-catching warm white porcelain, were created and dedicated by the 10th generation Imaizumi Imaemon during the Meiji period. It uses the same clay from Izumiyama as the torii, and is unique to a pottery town. The restored guardian dog, which has been recreated in its original color, is a must-see.

The large torii gate is made of porcelain with a pale blue arabesque pattern and symbolizes Arita. The precincts are dotted with buildings and lanterns decorated with Arita porcelain, and you can enjoy porcelain art like an open-air museum. We recommend the beautiful "Arita ware goshuincho" distributed at the awarding office.
