A Popular Bakery's Craft in Kawaguchiko

FUJIPEL

Bread and Coffee at a Bakery Café near Lake Kawaguchi

"FUJIPEL," located in Funatsu, Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, is the third bakery cafe following Kofu's popular bakery "AMPEL GRAINFACTORY" and "Cafe Pel" near Kofu Station. A wide variety of breads line the shop, available for takeout or to enjoy at a leisurely pace with coffee.

A Popular Bakery's Craft in Kawaguchiko

"FUJIPEL," just across Kawaguchiko-ohashi Bridge, serves freshly baked bread and coffee. The same focus on ingredients and breadmaking that Kofu's "AMPEL GRAINFACTORY" has long valued is found in Kawaguchiko as well. The wide selection ranges from bread made with house-milled whole wheat flour to varieties that pair well with meals and seasonal items. Choices include "Sugar Donut," "Salt Bread," "Croque Monsieur," "Shine Muscat," and "Pistachio Chocolate." Coffee drinks such as "Cafe Latte" are also available, and settling in to enjoy your choice of bread and drink is part of the appeal.

Soft and fluffy with a melt-in-your-mouth texture

Available in a variety of flavors

The Delightfully Fluffy "Sugar Donut (Plain)"

A must-try at "FUJIPEL" is the donut made with brioche sandwich bread dough. The simple "Sugar Donut" highlights the flavor of the dough itself. Unlike a typical donut, it's so soft and fluffy that it's difficult to hold in your hand. Each bite is light and airy, with the dough seeming to gently collapse and melt away in your mouth. The bakery's expertise in dough-making comes through in the flavor of these donuts. They're a great match for coffee in the shop and also make a convenient takeout treat while sightseeing in the Kawaguchiko area. Other flavors include matcha kinako (matcha and roasted soybean flour) and chocolate coconut.

  • A Light Texture from Brioche-Style Bread Dough

The breads are made primarily with high-hydration dough containing whole wheat flour, giving them a moist, chewy texture. The donuts use brioche loaf dough, resulting in a soft, fluffy texture that gently falls apart in the mouth. They also showcase the bakery's focus on dough in a lighter form unique to donuts.

  • Coffee and Café Lattes to Pair with Bread

"FUJIPEL" also offers a selection of coffee drinks to pair with its breads. The eat-in area lets you relax over freshly baked bread and a drink. Café lattes are available in single and double options. Pairing coffee with sweet breads such as donuts brings out the flavor and sweetness of the dough, offering another way to enjoy the bakery café.

A Focus on Freshly Stone-Ground Whole Wheat Flour

Fresh whole wheat flour ground in the workshop's stone mill is used in all of the bakery's breads. The bakery also uses some ingredients grown without pesticides and takes care to bring out their natural flavors. Breads such as whole wheat campagne (French-style country bread) highlight the aroma and rustic flavor of the wheat, with the flour's natural flavor becoming more pronounced as you chew. • An oven imported from Germany

A Taste of German Culinary Traditions in Kawaguchiko

The owner's interest in bread began while studying abroad in Germany during university. Encountering a wide variety of breads and the local food culture, and being drawn to their flavors, became the foundation of the breadmaking practiced today. Growing up in a rice-farming family also made "food" a familiar part of life from an early age, and Germany's deeply rooted bread culture left a strong impression. To recreate those flavors as closely as possible, the bakery has also invested in equipment, including an oven imported from Germany.

Interior

An interior that brings nature indoors

Furniture with the warmth of natural wood

A variety of other breads are also available

The interior features soft ivory tones accented by muted olive-colored doors and window frames. Freshly baked breads are displayed in the simple, uncluttered space, with an eat-in area for enjoying a purchase with coffee. The spacious interior also makes it easy to stop for a break rather than simply pick up bread to go. This bakery cafe offers a calm place to spend time surrounded by the aroma of bread while exploring the Kawaguchiko area.

A message from the owner

Because bread is such a natural part of everyday meals, I want to make ours with care and attention to the ingredients. At our bakery, you can take your time enjoying bread made with whole wheat flour freshly ground in our workshop's stone mill, along with a cup of coffee. We offer everything from crusty breads and sandwich loaves to sweet breads and seasonal items made with fruit from Yamanashi Prefecture. I hope you'll find a favorite that suits your mood that day.

The moment I stepped inside, the aroma of bread filled the air, and the wide variety of neatly displayed breads immediately caught my eye. From crusty breads to softer varieties, the selection is ideal for lunch, a café break, or picking out something to bring as a gift. The bright interior, warmed by wood accents, is a comfortable place to spend time alone or with children. Easy to stop by while sightseeing, it's the kind of bakery that makes you want to return again and again to find a favorite.
