Kuriya Coffee
栗屋珈琲
A Traditional Japanese Folk House Café with Tranquil Views
Set amid the peaceful countryside of Nishio, Aichi Prefecture, this cafe offers a relaxed setting with the character of a traditional Japanese house. Its house-roasted coffee pairs with time spent quietly alone or in conversation with someone special, and the cafe also makes a convenient stop during a motorcycle ride or drive.
House-Roasted Coffee and Flavors Worth Savoring
Originally focused on custom coffee roasting, the shop moved into its current location in 2025 after relocating and rebuilding an old traditional house to create a place where coffee could be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. The interior reuses timber dating from the Edo period and incorporates antique furniture, creating a calm setting with a sense of old-world character. Counter seating reflects its aim to be a "coffee shop for grown-ups" where solo customers can stop by with ease. The selection centers on specialty coffee, along with food and sweets that pair well with it. Seasonal fruit drinks are also available, highlighting flavors throughout the year. Open from 11:30 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., the shop serves coffee, sweets, and lunch as well as alcoholic drinks and snacks. Coffee is also available for takeout.
Tabiiro’s picks: signature dishes
Rich "Old-Fashioned Showa Pudding" with Bittersweet Caramel
The aromatic, richly flavored "Old-Fashioned Showa Pudding" has a firm texture with just the right amount of springiness and a gentle sweetness. It is made with "Umami Egg," known for their deep-colored yolks and subtle sweetness, giving the pudding added depth and richness. A generous layer of bittersweet caramel balances the flavors, while roasted, crushed cashews sprinkled over the whipped cream add another layer of texture and flavor. Its retro, charming appearance is another highlight, and it pairs especially well with coffee.

"Umami Egg" as the Key to the Flavor
The pudding is made with locally produced "Umami Egg" from a poultry farm in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture. Their rich yolks and subtle sweetness are key to the pudding's flavor. The chickens are raised in a natural setting with attention given to their feed and water. These deeply flavored eggs provide the richness needed for the pudding's firm, gently springy texture.
Popular pairings
"Kuriya Blend"
The popular "Kuriya Blend" is an original blend made with beans from five countries. Each bean is roasted separately to bring out its individual character before the beans are combined, a method known as post-roast blending that creates a layered flavor profile. Coffee is served in an Arita ware, "Koshu-hai" cups, chosen to enhance its aroma and flavor; the thin rim also provides a smooth drinking feel. The coffee arrives in a flask, allowing it to be poured a little at a time and revealing changes in aroma and flavor as it cools. An iced version is also available, served with both a regular glass and a flask so its changing flavor can be appreciated in the same way.
Must-try signature dish
-
"Spaghetti Hayashi Gratin"
The owner's original "Spaghetti Hayashi Gratin" is a popular dish with many repeat customers. Spaghetti is topped with rich white sauce, house-made hayashi sauce, and plenty of cheese, then baked until bubbling. Its unexpected combination has surprised many customers with how well the flavors come together. Though "Kuriya Coffee" is a coffee shop, this distinctive dish also makes lunch or a full meal a reason to visit.
-
"Kuriya Coffee Jelly Soft-Serve Parfait"
This parfait pairs coffee jelly made with house-roasted dark-roast coffee with smooth soft serve. Made simply with coffee jelly and soft serve, it highlights the full flavor of the dark-roast coffee. The soft serve is topped with ground coffee, adding a roasted aroma to its mellow sweetness.

House Roasting That Brings Out Coffee Beans' Natural Flavor
Reflecting its origins in custom coffee roasting, the shop still sells coffee beans and offers roasting tailored to individual preferences. All coffee served in-house is roasted on-site to highlight the character of each bean. Cashews, pistachios, almonds, and other nuts are also roasted in-house and can be enjoyed with coffee or purchased as souvenirs, showcasing their natural flavors.

Flavor That Starts with the Ingredients
Ingredients are selected for quality, with an emphasis on products from Japan, including "Umami Egg" from a poultry farm in Nishio, Aichi Prefecture. Attention also extends to seasonings: the white soy sauce is made in-house, while the chicken ham used in sandwiches is handmade to preserve the natural flavor of the ingredients. By relying less on ready-made products and putting more work into preparation, the shop aims to create better-tasting food.
Interior
The cafe was created by relocating and rebuilding a traditional Japanese folk house, with abundant wood throughout the interior creating a warm setting for coffee and meals at a leisurely pace. Large windows look out onto natural scenery that changes with the seasons, providing a relaxing view. Dried flowers decorate the ceiling, adding another thoughtful touch to the interior. The character of the old house blends with a comfortable atmosphere, creating a place where it is easy to linger.

Coffee Beans and Nuts Available for Purchase In-Store
House-roasted coffee beans and nuts are displayed near the register. The same beans used for coffee served in the shop are available for purchase to enjoy at home, and custom roasting is also offered.
