A Place to Be Yourself, Day or Night

Toki no Suna

時の砂

A Café to Unwind as Sand Slips Through an Hourglass

This cafe serves house-made sweets such as Basque cheesecake and financiers. Inspired by the idea of "spending time slowly, like simply watching sand fall," it offers a relaxed setting from daytime through evening, with each person free to unwind in their own way.

A Place to Be Yourself, Day or Night

Located about a 7-minute walk from JR Takatsuki Station and an 8-minute walk from Hankyu Takatsuki-shi Station, this café is open daily from noon to midnight. It is a good choice not only for an afternoon coffee break but also for unwinding after work or continuing a conversation after dinner. Wi-Fi and seating with power outlets make it suitable for work or study. With both sofa seating and terrace seating, the café accommodates different occasions and preferences, providing a comfortable place for people of all ages to spend time as they please.

"Basque Cheesecake (Matcha)" made with Uji matcha

A signature dessert combining the aroma of matcha with the richness of cheese

Handmade "Basque Cheesecake (Matcha)" Baked Thoroughly with Attention to Sweetness

The "Basque Cheesecake" is made in-house from the preparation stage and baked through for a firm texture and nostalgic coffee-shop-style flavor rather than a molten center. The sweetness is balanced around the idea that it should be "easy to finish yet still satisfying." The matcha version is especially recommended, using matcha sourced directly from a tea company in Uji, Kyoto, selected for its quality. Its rich matcha aroma and flavor come through alongside the richness of the cheese, making it a popular choice with repeat orders from matcha fans. Served with whipped cream, it gently softens the matcha's pleasant bitterness.

  • "Basque Cheesecake (Matcha)" to Savor with Coffee

"Basque Cheesecake (Matcha)" also pairs well with coffee. The pleasant bitterness of matcha and richness of the cheese combine with the roasted aroma of coffee for a fuller flavor.

"Financiers" in three flavors: plain, black tea, and matcha

"Financier"

The "Financier" was developed through repeated testing and is made with butter rather than margarine. Larger than a typical financier, it comes in three flavors: plain, Earl Grey, and matcha. The plain version contains plenty of almond flour, while the Earl Grey version uses a generous amount of tea for a rich flavor. The matcha version uses the same matcha sourced from a tea company in Uji, Kyoto, as the "Basque Cheesecake (Matcha)." For dine-in orders, the financiers are served warm, bringing out the aroma of the butter. They are suited both as a personal treat and as a gift.

Must-try signature dish

  • Six Types of Coffee Beans and a Range of Brews to Suit Different Tastes

Six types of coffee beans are available, ranging from light to dark roasts. The beans are selected with dessert pairings in mind, with options to suit different preferences. Coffee can be enjoyed as hand-drip, espresso, or latte, and decaf is also available for those who are pregnant or prefer coffee at night.

  • "Hojicha Latte"

Made with hojicha (roasted green tea) sourced from the same tea producer as the matcha, this tea has a rich flavor and pronounced aroma. Another appeal is its high quality at an affordable price. It is available both hot and iced.

Restaurant highlights

  • A relaxed atmosphere for leisurely evenings

A Café Serving the Same Menu by Day and Night

Open from noon to midnight, the cafe serves the same menu in the evening as during the day. At night, warm-toned lighting creates a calmer atmosphere with a different feel from daytime. It is suited to lingering over conversation after a meal, taking a break after work, or spending time working or studying. Decaf coffee and caffeine-free tea are also available, making it easy to relax into the evening.

  • The name "Toki no Suna," inspired by the hourglass

The Hourglass Inspiration Behind the Name "Toki no Suna"

The name "Toki no Suna" comes from an hourglass and reflects the idea of "spending time slowly, like simply watching sand fall." Just as fallen sand makes the passage of time visible, the name expresses the hope that time spent here will also leave something lasting. With no limit on how long customers may stay, the cafe aims to provide a space where people of all ages and genders can relax at their own pace.

A spacious interior with high ceilings

A calm space warmed by natural wood

Relaxed seating, including sofas

Antique-style furniture and lighting, along with extensive use of dark-toned wood, create a calm interior. High ceilings add a spacious, open feel, while the warmth of the wood makes it easy to relax. Sofa seating is available, and groups of around eight to ten people can also be accommodated. Dogs are welcome on the terrace, and even the plates, glasses, and decorative items have been selected to match the cafe's concept.

  • An Antique-Style Interior with Attention to Every Detail

Based on the concept of "relaxing without worrying about the time," the interior was created in consultation with craftsmen. Furniture sourced from antique shops and other stores is combined to suit the space, while antique lighting adds warmth to the atmosphere. Attention extends even to restroom fixtures and small decorative items, maintaining a consistent aesthetic throughout.

A message from the owner

A Hokusetsu native turned a student-day wish for "a place like this" into reality. The aim is to create an approachable spot not only for enjoying a cafe break, but also for working, studying, and other purposes. People of all ages and genders are welcome to spend time here in whatever way suits them. Drawing on years of experience in baking and confectionery, the cafe plans to continue adding new menu items and evolving into an even more enjoyable place.
