A Century of Akita Flavors and Hospitality

Seasonal flavors of Akita meet the traditions of a ryotei passed down for 100 years. Formal yet approachable, the restaurant welcomes everything from milestone celebrations to everyday meals. It is a place to experience Japanese cuisine rooted in the region, along with warm hospitality, during a visit to Akita.

The Flavors of a Traditional Ryotei in a Relaxed Japanese Restaurant

Founded in 1926 by its first proprietress, this long-established ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant) has grown alongside the local community. While preserving the traditional flavors and heartfelt hospitality that have defined it since its founding, the restaurant continues to challenge the perception that "ryotei dining is intimidating," striving to create a welcoming, approachable atmosphere. It caters to everything from everyday meals to anniversaries and celebrations, offering seasonal dishes and special events that make the most of ingredients at their peak. In a warm setting where people come together and smiles come naturally, the restaurant carries its cherished traditions forward to the next generation. Deeply rooted in the community, it is a place worth visiting for both life's special milestones and ordinary days.

Akita's Seasonal Flavors and Colors in the "Dinner Course (¥7,700)"

The "Dinner Course (¥7,700, tax included)" features eight dishes showcasing seasonal flavors from Akita: sashimi, a palate refresher, a fried dish, a grilled dish, a substantial main dish, a steamed dish, a rice course, and dessert. The menu changes with the seasons. Courses priced at ¥6,600 or more, including this one, also feature the popular branded wagyu "Akita Beef." Fresh seafood landed off the coast of Akita and other local ingredients are incorporated throughout the course, with seasonal specialties such as mountain vegetables in spring, junsai in summer, and mushrooms in fall. In winter, a limited-time kiritanpo hot pot made with plenty of "Mitsuseki Seri" is also available. The course is suited to everything from everyday dining to business meals, anniversaries, and celebrations, offering a broad taste of Akita's food culture.

  • A Winter Delicacy: "Mitsuseki Seri," Roots and All

"Mitsuseki Seri," a specialty ingredient from Yuzawa, Akita, is known for its rich aroma and crisp texture. The winter-only "Mitsuseki Seri Kiritanpo Hot Pot" uses the vegetable generously, including the roots. The roots are also served as tempura, offering different flavors and textures depending on the preparation. It is a seasonal way to enjoy this distinctive taste of an Akita winter.

Centered on colorful Japanese dishes featuring seasonal ingredients, the course can also be adjusted to suit the budget, occasion, or individual requests. It works well for gatherings with friends, business lunches, family celebrations, anniversaries, and other meals. On request, Akita specialties such as "Kiritanpo Hot Pot," "Akitakomachi" rice, and "Inaniwa Udon" can also be added. From seasonal ingredients to regional dishes, the course offers a relaxed way to enjoy Akita cuisine at lunch.

Must-try signature dish

  • An Extensive Selection of Local Akita Sake

A wide selection of sake is available, including bottles chosen from Yuzawa and other parts of Akita Prefecture. The restaurant also offers notable sake from across Japan, selected to pair with seasonal dishes, and sake tasting flights are recommended for comparing different styles. Along with local sake, the drink menu includes draft beer, shochu, sours, highballs, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks.

  • "Nasu Dengaku" with a Flavor Unchanged Since the Restaurant Opened

"Nasu Dengaku" has retained the same simple flavor since the restaurant was founded, even as the setting around it has changed. Seasonal eggplant is slowly grilled and paired with a special miso, creating a soft, almost melting texture and a savory roasted aroma. The richness of the miso brings out the natural character of the eggplant, and the dish pairs especially well with sake. Its simplicity highlights both the ingredient and the chef's technique.

Restaurant highlights

  • Yuzawa's geisha culture, passed down through generations, up close

A Special Time Enriched by Cuisine and Geisha Culture

"Yunohana Geigi" offers an approachable way to experience traditional ozashiki culture alongside a meal. The program includes graceful dance, traditional parlor games, conversation with the geisha, and commemorative photos, adding a festive element to the meal. It is also part of an effort to pass ryotei and geisha culture on to future generations and is available for business meals, anniversaries, and sightseeing visits. Plans featuring shamisen and either a maiko or geisha are available; contact the restaurant for details and pricing.

  • Seasonal bonsai to admire alongside the meal

Carefully Tended Bonsai Reflecting the Changing Seasons

The bonsai displayed throughout the building are tended by the company president himself. Cherry blossoms and azaleas come into bloom in spring, while the displays change with the seasons, offering a different view with each visit. Enjoying the bonsai alongside the meal brings a visual sense of the season as well as its flavors. Traditional Japanese cuisine and Japanese aesthetics come together to add calm and seasonal color to the dining experience.

A message from the owner

People often think, "Dining at a ryotei can feel intimidating," but we want our traditional Japanese restaurant to be a welcoming place that locals love and feel comfortable visiting in everyday clothes. We often welcome groups of women and offer a "Girls' Get-Together Plan," as well as our "Yunohana Geigi Plan," which combines a delicious meal with the chance to appreciate the graceful movements of geigi (geisha). We hope to show that ryotei dining can be both stylish and approachable. We invite everyone to enjoy the traditional flavors we have preserved since the first year of the Showa era (1926).
