High-Quality Eel at an Approachable Price

Kidoya Okazaki

木戸屋 岡崎店

Eel Grilled One by One with Care

"Kidoya Okazaki" sources fresh eel from a wholesaler with about 90 years of history and grills each piece individually. Its appeal lies in the ingredients and grilling technique, producing eel with fragrant skin, tender flesh, and rich umami.

High-Quality Eel at an Approachable Price

"Kidoya Okazaki" is the second location following "Kidoya Nishio," which branched off from a popular eel restaurant. Unusually for an eel restaurant, it is run by a female owner who wants more people to enjoy eel as an accessible dining option. With a focus on balancing price and quality, each eel is prepared individually before serving. The "Unadon" (eel rice bowl), served in a traditional magewappa wooden container, is also appealing for its attractive presentation. From a casual lunch to a meal for a special occasion, guests can enjoy authentic eel together with warm, attentive hospitality.

"Unanegitoro-jū" served in a wappa box

Popular with women for being easy to finish

"Unanegitoro-jū," Popular Among Women

Combining melty, crispy, and juicy textures in a single dish, this original menu item is especially popular with women. It was created from the owner's desire to make eel more approachable, and finding the right negitoro (minced fatty tuna) to pair with the eel and rice meant visiting numerous specialty shops before settling on an ingredient that met the owner's standards. The sweet-savory eel sauce pairs surprisingly well with the negitoro, creating a combination that keeps diners coming back for more. Like a bento, the dish also offers a variety of flavors in a single container, while the magewappa wooden vessel itself is another point of attention, with each one individually finished by artisans. A number of regulars order it every time they visit, making it a popular dish unique to the restaurant.

  • Fresh Eel Selected with Care

Fresh eel is sourced from a wholesaler with a history of about 90 years and prepared in-house. The staff selects eel in the best condition for each time of year, allowing diners to enjoy high-quality unagi in any season. Once grilled, the selected eel develops a fragrant, savory finish. Despite using high-quality eel, the restaurant keeps prices accessible, another reason it has earned a loyal following.

Carefully crafted pudding that enhances the lingering flavor of the unagi

"Torofuwa Pudding"

The house-made "Torofuwa Pudding" was developed from an original recipe with a focus on a smooth texture. The mixture is strained three times, with time and effort devoted to achieving its soft, silky consistency. Its restrained sweetness and rich flavor are designed to remain satisfying even after a meal of unagi. The pudding’s delicate jiggle and melt-in-the-mouth texture have made it popular, and it can also be ordered on its own. At lunchtime, diners can enjoy unagi with dessert and a drink as a value set. Quantities are limited, so ordering early is recommended.

Interior

Bright, clean interior filled with natural light

Comfortable for solo diners and groups alike

The bright, open interior combines a simple white color scheme with the warmth of natural wood, creating a calm and relaxed setting. With both table and counter seating arranged in a spacious layout, the restaurant comfortably accommodates everyone from small parties to large groups. Enjoy the restaurant’s unagi at your leisure in a clean, inviting space.

A message from the owner

As a female owner, which is still relatively uncommon among eel restaurants, I run the restaurant with the hope of making eel more approachable and easier to enjoy. "I strive to offer high-quality eel at reasonable prices," and while I still have much to learn, my love for unagi is second to none. Whether dining alone or with family and friends, guests are welcomed with heartfelt hospitality and a comfortable setting where they can relax and enjoy their time.

From the Tabiiro Editorial Team

This unagi specialty restaurant pairs warm hospitality from its female owner with "a desire to make eel more approachable." The restaurant delivers fresh eel daily, selects it for quality, and grills it with a secret sauce, all at an accessible price. Original menu items and house-made pudding are also popular, making it an inviting place to enjoy authentic unagi without formality.
