Located in Chiyoda-machi, Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, this sushi restaurant charms guests with its old-fashioned atmosphere. Its welcoming, unpretentious approach makes it easy to relax and enjoy sushi served with each guest's preferences in mind. The chef's friendly, easygoing personality is another reason the restaurant is loved by its regulars. This popular spot is said to fill up almost every day.

Select Fresh Seafood from Across Japan

"Sushi Yamamoto" is a neighborhood sushi restaurant with deep local roots. It carries on the techniques of "Sushi Yajima," which the previous owner maintained for more than 50 years, under the new name "Sushi Yamamoto." Seasonal seafood is sourced from across Japan through Toyosu Market, without limiting purchases to any particular region. The restaurant also values a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere, and even its courses can be tailored to individual preferences, allowing diners to choose the sushi toppings they like. Its dependable technique and the head chef's friendly personality have made it a longtime favorite among local customers.

Select Tuna Sourced from Seasonal Fishing Regions for "Tuna Nigiri"

For more than 50 years, dating back to the previous generation, the restaurant has maintained long-standing relationships with seafood suppliers that began before the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market moved to Toyosu. Rather than limiting purchases to a specific region, the chef selects the best-condition tuna available that day from areas where it is in season. The popular staple "Tuna Nigiri" is a house specialty favored by regulars for its clear expression of the fish's natural umami. Another appeal is the chance to encounter flavors unique to each season on every visit. Each piece is prepared with the chef's experienced eye and technique and served in a calm Japanese-style setting.

An "Omakase Course" Tailored to Individual Preferences

The "Omakase Course" features nigiri made with ingredients at their seasonal peak that day, along with sashimi, Saikyo-yaki, grilled dishes, and other seasonal specialties. Preferences and budget can be discussed when booking, and the course can be tailored accordingly. Dishes may also be adjusted to suit your tastes or mood on the day. The chef selects seasonal ingredients and prepares each one to bring out its best qualities, showcasing fresh seafood and skilled technique throughout the course.

From the Tabiiro Editorial Team

The greatest charm of "Sushi Yamamoto" is undoubtedly the owner's friendly, approachable personality. The welcoming atmosphere makes you want to return after just one visit, and may well be why the restaurant has been loved by locals for so long. I was also struck by how the owner avoids drawing attention to the high-quality seafood he sources, even when it's hard to come by, choosing instead to let the dishes speak for themselves. For delicious sushi in an unpretentious setting, this is a restaurant well worth visiting.
