Machiya Cafe in a Historic Old Townscape
This cafe, located in a historic streetscape near JR and IR Ishikawa Railway Komatsu Station, is housed in a renovated townhouse that is over 90 years old. The nostalgic space features a display of glass artist's teardrop ornaments hanging from the atrium ceiling and is lined with around 5,000 second-hand books, offering a chance to encounter a once-in-a-lifetime collection of second-hand books. The shop serves healthy dishes made with carefully selected, mostly locally sourced ingredients, seasoned simply with koji and other ingredients, as well as homemade sweets that are packed with kindness. Their homemade jams, made with seasonal fruits from Ishikawa Prefecture, also make the perfect souvenir.
"Book Exchange Corner" Carried on Since the Beginning
This store sells second-hand books that have been passed on by previous owners. Come and browse the shelves, read the books and purchase them at your leisure. The store also offers a 'book exchange' programme, whereby you can bring in books from home and earn 1 point per book. These points can then be exchanged for books in the store.
"World Literature Jam Collection" Rooted in Local Pride
Homemade jams made with seasonal fruits and vegetables, simmered in raw sugar from Tanegashima, are available to purchase in stores and online. These jams, which include the aptly named "Kaga Bocchan" (a play on the title of Natsume Sōseki's masterpiece "Botchan"), also make great gifts.
