One of the Oldest Stores in Odawara, Run by the Uiro Family
"Uiro" is said to be the birthplace of "Uiro", which was born in the Muromachi period about 600 years ago. It is a long - established store that has maintained its tradition for 25 generations. Originally, "Uiro" referred to medicine made by the Uiro family, and later on, steamed rice flour sweets designed for serving customers came to be called "Sweet Uiro." Today, "Uiro" still manufactures and sells "Uiro" medicine as well as sweets. "Uiro", a confectionery made by "Uiro", is characterized by its chewy texture and refreshing, elegant sweetness. A total of five types of "Uiro" are on sale. We want you to enjoy this famous confectionery that continues to be loved by Japanese people while thinking back to the past.
Uiro of Sweets
It began in the Muromachi period when the Uiro clan made and served it themselves when entertaining guests. It is said that what was called "Uiro's confectionery" later came to be called "confectionary Uiro," similar to medicine Uiro. Sweets sold since the Meiji era have long been made in the shape of sticks, and are enjoyed by being cut into pieces and served at banquets and tea ceremonies. The flavor of Muromachi culture that can only be experienced in the Uiro family still continues to grow in history in the castle town of Odawara.
Uiro Museum
A small museum located in a storehouse built in 1888. The Uiro family has continued to uphold its traditions for 25 generations, more than 600 years since its founder, Chen Yanyu, and 500 years since the fifth generation, Sadaharu, moved to the area. The reason for the unique store appearance, the origin of the name "Uiro", the origins of sweets and medicine, and the relationship with the Kabuki Juhachiban "Uirouri" are introduced along with items related to Odawara's oldest merchant house.
