Strolling Among Kyoto’s Landmarks and Seasonal Scenery
Established in 1909 (Meiji 42) as a guesthouse for distinguished visitors to Kyoto, "Chourakukan" is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Today, it operates as a boutique hotel, complemented by a new annex housing six guest rooms, offering a private and personalized style of hospitality. From the guest rooms and viewing spaces, cultural landmarks such as Heian Jingu can be seen, along with seasonal landscapes that shift throughout the year. In winter, the gentle glow of a wood-burning fireplace creates a warm and restful atmosphere. In June 2025, the property will join "Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH)," a collection of independent luxury hotels around the globe.

Guest Room

The Premier Room with the Finest View

The "Panorama Park View Twin Room" is located on the 4th floor, the top floor, and overlooks the scenery of Higashiyama and the north side of Kyoto. The space is full of openness and you can even see the torii gate of Heian Shrine. The "Panorama Park View Hollywood Twin Room" is also located on the 4th floor.

A Spacious Guest Room on the Third Floor

The "Park View Twin Room" overlooks Maruyama Park and the surrounding landscape. In summer, the "Kyoto Gozan Okuribi bonfires"—registered as an intangible folk cultural property of Kyoto—can be seen, while autumn foliage and spring cherry blossoms offer seasonal beauty throughout the year. Despite its central location in Kyoto, the room is enveloped in a calm quietness, providing a restful and unhurried stay.

A Forest-Inspired Guest Room

From the "Cypress View Twin Room," you can see Otani Sando and feel as if you are in the forest. The guest rooms are decorated with natural materials and are located farthest from the elevators, making them quiet. It is barrier-free with sliding doors on the 3rd floor and doors on the 4th floor.

Fine Amenities Showcasing Kyoto’s Craftsmanship

The hotel's original Shingen bag contains amenities such as Kyoto Chidoriya's skin care products (no artificial ingredients) and herbal-scented handmade soap. The Shingen bag has a Yuzen dyeing motif, and it's great to be able to take it home as a souvenir.

Cuisine

A Refined French Dining Experience

"LE CHENE" is a neo-classical style dining room, surrounded by refined furnishings that evoke a sense of timeless elegance. Classical French cuisine is served here, along with an American breakfast prepared using carefully selected ingredients chosen by the chef.

A Private Bar Reserved for Staying Guests

"LIBRARY BAR MADEIRA" houses a collection of more than 100 varieties of Madeira wine from Portugal, available by the glass to appreciate the differences in character and aroma. Rare Japanese whiskies are also part of the selection.

Elegant and Gorgeous "Dessert Cafe Chourakukan"

The popular afternoon tea is served in the dedicated room "Geihin no Ma." The space features an elegant Rococo style, with furnishings from the Meiji period still in use today. Surrounded by authentic historical décor, a selection of teas and carefully crafted sweets can be savored in an atmosphere of refined grace.

Facility

Refined Time in an Exclusive Private Lounge

The guest-only lounge is a relaxing space accented with Swarovski lighting, solid-wood furnishings, and décor originating from the property’s status as a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. From here, views extend across Higashiyama and Maruyama Park, offering a quiet moment to take in the shifting beauty of the seasons.

Chourakukan Boutique with Thoughtful Take-Home Selections

Pound cakes, cookies, and jams crafted by the hotel’s pâtissier are available for purchase. The boutique also offers "MURAI’S CAMELIA," a confection inspired by tobacco and connected to the hotel’s founder, Murai Kichibei. These items may be purchased in person or through the online shop.

A Celebratory Occasion in a Grand Kyoto Guesthouse

There are many plans available to brighten up your special moments. Some of our "Banquet Plan", "Meeting Dinner Plan", and photo wedding plans come with a dinner plan, allowing you to set up your photoshoot and dinner in an elegant space.

Location

An Exceptional Location Immersed in Kyoto’s Seasons

The corner of Higashiyama was selected as a suitable site for entertaining guests during construction, and the scenery throughout the seasons remains spectacular throughout the years. Adjacent to Maruyama Park, you can also walk to tourist spots such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kodai-ji Temple, and Chion-in Temple.
