Taisho Romantic Architecture of a Traditional Hot Spring Inn
In Ehime Prefecture, Dogo Onsen, said to be Japan's oldest hot spring, has been seeing an increase in new facilities. However, Tokiwaso Ryokan, a long-beloved wooden inn that has preserved its original appearance since the Taisho era, stands out. Renovated in 2023, it maintains the charm of the original building while offering a clean and comfortable space. The bath, utilizing the same hot spring water as the "Dogo Onsen Main Building," can be privately enjoyed, with guests also treated to kaiseki cuisine featuring fresh seafood from the Seto Inland Sea. The rooms are deliberately free of televisions, enabling guests to fully enjoy their hot spring experience. Relax and immerse yourself in the hot springs and picturesque townscape with a good book, enjoying the unhurried passage of time.

Guest Room

"Kiri" - Japanese-Style Room Offering Hot Spring Town Scenery

There are four guest rooms in total, two of which are 6-tatami mat and two of which are 12-tatami mat Japanese-style rooms. The 6-tatami mat room "Kiri" offers a view of the hot spring town, with the "Dogo Onsen Main Building" visible when you open the window and look to the right. The scent of tatami mats is nostalgic, making it the perfect room for traveling alone.

"Hagi" - Tatami Room Designed for Broad Stay Needs

The spacious 12-tatami room "Hagi" can be used for a wide range of occasions, including families, couples, and groups of friends. The rooms are well-equipped with amenities, yukata, haori, geta sandals, and even a "bath basket" for storing soap and hand towels, making it convenient for touring the outdoor baths.

A Digital Detox Stay Designed for Slow Relaxation

Renovated in 2023, the rooms harmonize retro design and modern interior design without daring to place a TV. Surrounded by radios, antique-style telephones, and lighting fixtures, you'll want to savor the slow pace of life.

Spa

Luxury Soaking in a Long-Established Natural Hot Spring

The facility also has a bathhouse that draws water from the same source as the "Dogo Onsen Main Building," where you can enjoy 100% free-flowing hot spring water in a private setting. Enjoy the soft, smooth alkaline simple hot spring water to your heart's content, which is used for therapeutic bathing and known for its skin-friendly qualities.

Cuisine

Seasonal Kaiseki Highlighting Seto Inland Sea Fish and Shellfish

For dinner, you can enjoy a leisurely kaiseki meal in your room, prepared by the young master using fresh seafood caught in the Seto Inland Sea, selected by the owner, who is also a fisherman. Savorv a hearty selection of seasonal seafood, including sashimi, grilled fish, and fried dishes.

Gentle Japanese Breakfast to Start the Day Well

Breakfast features a well-balanced Japanese meal showcasing Ehime Prefecture specialties such as "jakoten." Start your day with a comforting, healthy breakfast. As with dinner, breakfast is also served in the room.

Location

Popular Sightseeing Spots Located Around the Inn

The inn, situated in the center of Dogo Onsen town, is also a great base for exploring the local tourist attractions. Right behind the inn is "Enmanji Temple," an ancient temple known for its blessings of love. The "Omusubidama Prayer," inspired by a yudama—a small ball-shaped offering associated with hot springs—is known for its visually striking form that draws attention on social media.

One-Minute Walk to "Dogo Onsen Main Building"

The "Dogo Onsen Main Building," located just a 1-minute walk from the inn, is the symbol of the Dogo Onsen town. It is said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan and the first public bathhouse to be designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Enjoy not only a bath, but also a moment to experience history and culture.

"Tsubaki no Yu, Dogo Onsen" - A Community-Favored Bathhouse

"Tsubaki-no-Yu, Dogo Onsen" is a public bathhouse that is an essential part of the lives of Matsuyama residents. The bathhouse has a high ceiling and an open feel, and features a kettle made from granite, where you can enjoy water straight from the source, just like at "Dogo Onsen Main Building." It's definitely worth stopping by when touring the outdoor baths.

A "Bathhouse" Concept Blending Traditional Crafts and Art

The "Dogo Onsen Annex Asuka no Yusen" is located about a 4-minute walk from the inn. It features the architectural style of the Asuka period and showcases the legends of the area through Ehime's traditional crafts and cutting-edge art, providing a unique hot spring cultural experience.
