Elegant Historic Residence Framing a Calm and Refined Stay
Built in 1909 as a guesthouse for distinguished visitors to Kyoto, "Chourakukan" is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Now operated as a boutique hotel with an annex containing six guest rooms, the property offers attentive service within an intimate setting. From the guest rooms and viewing spaces, cultural landmarks such as Heian Shrine and seasonal scenery can be seen, while in winter, the gentle glow of the wood-burning fireplace creates a warm atmosphere. In June 2025, the hotel joined "SLH (Small Luxury Hotels of the World)," a collection of distinctive independent hotels.

Guest Room

Top-Floor Guestroom with the Property’s Finest View

Located on the top fourth floor, the "Panorama Park View Twin Room" overlooks the landscapes of Higashiyama and northern Kyoto. The space offers an open view of the torii gate at Heian Shrine. The "Panorama Park View Hollywood Twin Room" is also located on the same fourth floor.

Forest-Themed Guestroom with Natural Calm and Soft Light

The "Cypress View Twin Room" overlooks Otani Sando through the window. Rooms on the third floor are designed with barrier-free features including handrails and sliding doors, while rooms on the fourth floor are equipped with standard doors. With the addition of an extra bed, the room can accommodate up to three guests.

Amenities Featuring a Selection of Fine Items Made in Kyoto

Amenities arrive in a hotel-original Shingen-bukuro drawstring pouch inspired by Yuzen dyeing, containing skincare products from Kyoto Chidoriya made without synthetic ingredients and handmade soap scented with herbs; the pouch also serves as a keepsake to take home after the stay.

Cuisine

Refined French Restaurant with Formal Dining Traditions

"LE CHENE" is the main dining room designed in a neoclassical style. Surrounded by elegant furnishings, the restaurant presents French cuisine from Kyoto that reflects a sense of terroir. The chef’s American breakfast, prepared with carefully selected ingredients, is also featured.

Private Guest Bar with Deep Wood and Quiet Atmosphere

"LIBRARY BAR MADEIRA" houses a collection of more than 100 varieties of Portuguese Madeira wine, available by the shot for tasting. Rare Japanese whiskies are also part of the selection.

Sunlit Salon and Artful Desserts at "Dessert Cafe Chourakukan"

The popular afternoon tea is served in the dedicated room "Geihin-no-Ma." The interior features an elegant Rococo-style design, with furnishings from the Meiji era still in use. Surrounded by these authentic settings, a selection of teas and sweets is presented.

Facility

"Private Lounge" Designed for Marking Memorable Occasions

The guest-only lounge offers a relaxing setting surrounded by Swarovski lighting, solid wood furnishings, and decor designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Views extend across Higashiyama and Maruyama Park, presenting seasonal scenery throughout the year.

Japanese Room Blending Eastern and Western Design Influences

Located on the top floor of the main building, the "Onari-no-Ma" features a distinctive spatial aesthetic that blends Eastern and Western cultures, with elements such as a coffered ceiling, sliding door paintings using gold and silver sand, and Baccarat crystal. The carefully detailed Japanese-style room may be viewed by overnight guests only.

Grand Reception Hall in Kyoto for Celebrated Occasions

A variety of plans are available for special occasions, including a "Banquet Plan" and a "Family Meeting Dining Plan." Photo wedding plans are also offered, some accompanied by dining arrangements, allowing photography sessions and meals to be held within the property’s distinctive setting.

Member of SLH Recognized for Distinctive Hospitality

A member of "SLH (Small Luxury Hotels of the World)," the property preserves design elements from the time of its founding and offers a distinctive setting. With only six guest rooms, attentive hospitality defines the experience, creating a special stay in Kyoto.
