A Must-See Treasure House for History Fans That Tells the Story of Yonezawa

Keishoden Hall stands within the precincts of Uesugi Shrine, located on the former inner keep of Yonezawa Castle. The hall preserves a remarkable collection of cultural treasures associated with Uesugi Kenshin, Kagekatsu, Naoe Kanetsugu, and Lord Harunori (Yozan), including archival documents, armour, swords, calligraphy, and lacquerware. Displays of Sengoku-period armour and weaponry convey a vivid sense of the era’s martial spirit. The name Keishoden derives from the phrase Keiko Teru Kon in the preface to the Kojiki, expressing the idea of learning from the past to guide the present. The hall offers insight into the heritage and cultural legacy of the Uesugi clan.

A Valuable Historic Building Designed by Chuta Ito

The Keishoden Hall, which has been designated a nationally registered tangible cultural property, opened in 1923 (Taisho 12) as a treasure hall when Uesugi Shrine was rebuilt. It was designed by Ito Chuta, a professor emeritus at Tokyo Imperial University and a native of Yonezawa City, Yamagata. It is a representative early example of a fire-resistant concrete museum building.

The Museum Houses the Motto of Lord Uesugi Harunori (Yozan)

The famous ruler of the Yonezawa domain, Uesugi Harunori (Yozan), passed on the following waka poem to his retainers as part of the educational guidelines for his son, Akitaka, who would later become the domain's lord: "Attempt brings achievement; neglect brings nothing. What is thought impossible is merely what has not yet been tried." The original of this poem will be on display at Keishoden until July 8, 2025.
