Japan's Top Museum Offering a Real Submarine Experience

The museum is one of Japan's leading museums, located just a 5-minute walk from JR Kure Station. The highlight is the real submarine "Akishio" used by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, exhibited outdoors. You can explore the inside and enjoy the view of Kure Bay through a periscope in the command center. The museum also features various exhibits on minesweeping activities and submarines, along with a shop selling JMSDF goods and a café.

The Real Submarine

The Real Submarine "Akishio" is on Outdoor Display

The submarine "Akishio" was in service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force until 2004. It conducted various missions to protect Japan, and has been operating as a museum submarine since its decommissioning in 2007. Visitors can have a unique experience by exploring the ship from the third floor, observing the officers' quarters and the captain's room, and peering through the periscope in the command center.

Exploring the Work of Minesweepers in Mine Clearance

Exploring the Work of Minesweepers in Mine Clearance

One of the most important missions of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is minesweeping, which removes bombs and mines from the sea to keep the seas safe. On the second floor, actual mines and minesweeping equipment are on display, and the history of minesweeping, from the activities of the members who defied the danger to remove mines for the sake of postwar reconstruction, to the present day, is introduced.
