All of these places are famous, but for those who want to enjoy spectacular views, Meoto Iwa rocks (known as the Wedded Rocks) and the Asakuma Summit Observation Deck are highly recommended. For food lovers and those who enjoy walking around, Okage Yokocho and Toba Marche are excellent choices. History enthusiasts should not miss the Isemairi Museum and the Ise Furuichi Sangu Kaido Museum, both of which provide insights into the region's rich history.

If you're unsure where to start, take a look at the model courses introduced here for inspiration.

How should you explore? Here are some recommended sightseeing routes.

It has been the ancient custom to visit Ise Jingu starting from the Geku. If you want to follow the formal procedure, you should visit the Geku first, then the Naiku. After visiting the Geku and Naiku, we recommend enjoying eating and shopping at Oharai Town and Okage Yokocho, located in front of the torii gate of the Naiku.

For those who want a more spiritual experience, consider purifying your mind and body at Futami Okitama Shrine, the place of purification, before visiting Ise Jingu.

[Ise City] Okage Yokocho

A Must-Visit Spot for Visitors to Ise Jingu

Okage Yoko Town is a spot with about 50 shops located in the middle of the temple town of Ise jingu. It has an attractive retro atmosphere that recreates the Iseji streetscape from the Edo to Meiji periods through relocated buildings and other techniques. There are also famous restaurants where you can enjoy gourmet food unique to Ise, such as tekone zushi and Ise udon. The approximate time required for a walk is about 2 hours, including a leisurely break for lunch.

[Ise City] Ise Jingu / Geku

Start your visit to Ise from here

When visiting Ise Jingu, it is an ancient custom to visit the Geku (outer Shrine) first before the Naiku (inner Shrine). If you want to visit the shrines in the official order, visiting the Geku is a must. Toyouke no Omikami, worshipped as the guardian deity of food, clothing, shelter, and industry, is enshrined in the Geku. The official name of the Geku is Toyouke Daijingu. The sacred area at the foot of Mt. Takakura is full of attractions, including the Shinmei-style Goshoden and Takanomiya Shrine and more, which are surrounded by majestic cedar trees. Please pray in peace.

The highlights include seasonal flowers and breathtaking views.

Ise Jingu is also famous as a place where you can enjoy spectacular views unique to each season. In early summer, approximately 14,000 irises bloom around Magatama Pond in the Geku, creating a stunningly beautiful scene.

Throughout the year, Ise Jingu offers breathtaking views, including fresh greenery in the summer, vibrant autumn leaves in the fall, and enchanting snowy landscapes in the cold winter. In addition to visiting the shrine, we recommend taking a leisurely stroll through the shrine grounds, where a mystical atmosphere awaits.

[Ise City] Shikinen Sengu Memorial Sengukan

Facility where you can learn about Shikinen Sengu

This facility introduces the history and festival of Shikinen Sengu, which is held once every 20 years at Ise Jingu. It was established in 2013 (Heisei 25) to coincide with the 62nd Shikinen Sengu of Ise Jingu. There are plenty of things to see, including a full-size model of the side of the Geku Shoden, exhibits showcasing the masterful skills of the craftsmen, and the beautiful Magatama Pond. Learn about the history and culture of Shikinen Sengu, which has been passed down for over 1300 years.

A must-visit place for those who feel the hurdles to entering a museum are high.

A useful guide to walking around the facility is the "Children's Walking Guide to Sengukan," which is available on the official website. It is designed for children, so even those who are not familiar with shrines or history can easily read and understand the exhibits.
Another attraction is that you can learn more about not only the Sengu but also the establishment of Ise Jingu. It is located on the way from the Geku to the Naiku of Ise Jingu, so why not stop by for a break?

[Ise City]Ise Furuichi Sangu-kaido Museum

The Sangu-Kaido road, which connects the Geku and Naiku, was a place where pilgrims to Ise ended their religious devotion and was one of Japan's three major red-light districts, along with Edo Yoshiwara and Kyoto Shimabara.

The Ise Furuichi Sangu-Kaido Museum exhibits the history of the entertainment district that shaped Ise's culture, as well as materials on Ise Kabuki. Why not take a look at a different side of Ise that is rarely seen?

Little-known sightseeing spots where you can enjoy your visit to Ise

This museum exhibits a wide variety of items, including photo panels and Japanese paintings by Hiroshige Utagawa. Irregular special exhibitions are also held, making it a little-known historical spot where you can explore the vibrancy of Furuichi and the atmosphere of the Ise pilgrimage from various perspectives.
