Spring is in the air, and we can feel its arrival. Due to the warm winter, some of you may be wondering, "Will the cherry blossoms bloom early this year?" According to the Japan Weather Association, the forecast for cherry blossom blooming in Nagoya City in 2024 was March 21, three days earlier than usual. It's about time to make plans for when and where to go to see the cherry blossoms. This time, we will carefully select and introduce 20 popular cherry blossom viewing spots in Aichi. There are many places in the prefecture where you can enjoy the strongest collaboration between castles and cherry blossoms, such as Nagoya Castle, Okazaki Castle, and Inuyama Castle, so we recommend viewing the cherry blossoms while exploring the history.

Inuyama Castle was built in 1537 by Nobuyasu Oda, the uncle of Nobunaga Oda. It has the oldest existing castle tower in Japan and is counted as one of the five national treasure castles. Because it is built on a hill along the Kisogawa River, it is also affectionately known as "Hakutei Castle" after a poem by Li Bai. Approximately 400 cherry blossom trees surround the castle, and you can enjoy the gorgeous scenery in late March.
National Treasure Inuyama Castle
This castle, built under the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is one of Japan’s three most famous castles. There are many attractions to see, including the beautifully constructed stone walls and the golden shachihoko (decorative fish) gleaming atop the main castle tower. Approximately 900 cherry trees of 10 different types are planted within the castle grounds. Every year, from late March to early April, the cherry blossom festival is held, and visitors can enjoy the enchanting illuminations.
Nagoya Castle
A park with vast grounds on the left bank of the Toyokawa River. The park is home to the city's historical, cultural, and sports facilities, including the Yoshida Castle ruins, art museum, track and field stadium, and baseball stadium. The area is also rich, and around 500 Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom in late March every year, attracting many visitors. You can enjoy fireworks during Toyoma Shrine's annual festival on the second Sunday of April, and it is also the stage for the Toyohashi Festival in October.
Toyohashi Park
The park has a zoo, a botanical garden, an amusement park, and even the Higashiyama Sky Tower, so you won't be able to see it all in one day. At the zoo, you can meet around 450 species of animals, including the western gorilla Shabani, Asian elephants, koalas, and lions. The botanical garden exhibits approximately 7,000 species of plants in a landscape that takes advantage of nature. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms throughout the park, and the corridor of approximately 1,000 cherry blossom trees is illuminated, creating a romantic atmosphere.
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden
Conveniently located just a short walk from Tsurumai Station on the JR Chuo Line, this is the first park established by Nagoya City on November 19, 1909. This park is popular for its unique Japanese-Western fusion atmosphere that combines elements of Western and Japanese gardens. There are approximately 700 Somei Yoshino in the park, as well as approximately 20,000 azaleas and approximately 200,000 irises. In Autumn, you can enjoy the changing leaves, allowing you to relax surrounded by beautiful scenery throughout the year.
Tsuruma Park
Located at the mouth of the Arakogawa River, which flows through Nakagawa Ward and Minato Ward. It is a comprehensive park with a long and narrow site running north and south across the river. In spring, approximately 1,000 cherry blossoms bloom on both banks of the Arako River, turning the area a gorgeous light pink color. In the summer, you can enjoy the lavender garden; in the fall, you can enjoy viewing the autumn leaves along the avenue lined with golden yellow trees.
Arakogawa Park
This historic Japanese garden was originally built as a retirement home for the feudal lord of Owari. It is full of elegance, with attractions such as the Ryumon Falls and Seikotei. It shows off a variety of different faces depending on the season, including cherry blossoms, irises, peonies, and in autumn, Japanese maples that turn bright red.
Tokugawaen
Okazaki Castle is the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The 3-story, 5-story castle tower was rebuilt in 1959, and has been developed into a park full of attractions, including many historical sites, a Japanese garden, a historical museum, a Japanese restaurant, and a teahouse. There are approximately 800 Somei Yoshino within the park and along the Otogawa and Igagawa rivers adjacent to the park, and it has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots. The Cherry Blossom Festival is held during the blooming season (March 22nd to April 7th in 2024) and is full of fun, including food truck stalls, fantastic illuminations, and viewing the cherry blossoms from a boat.
Okazaki Park
This park is located along the Yahagi River, a first-class river, and the wind from the river is pleasant in the summer. In the winter, it is a treasure trove of wild birds, including ducks, wagtails, and other waterfowl. In the spring, many visitors see the cherry blossoms as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Toyota City. There are approximately 400 Somei Yoshino cherry trees in the park, and a cherry blossom festival is held during the blooming season (March 24th to April 7th 2024). There are stalls lined up, and there are plenty of events such as local performing arts and open-air spots. At night, you can take a leisurely stroll through the illuminated cherry blossom tunnel.
Suigen Park
Nature is abundant around the large pond. The flowers that bloom and compete with each other throughout the four seasons are a feast for the eyes of visitors. This park is full of things to see, such as plum blossoms and cherry blossoms in spring, irises in early summer, and fireworks in summer. It is especially beautiful in spring when the area is decorated with approximately 700 cherry blossom trees of 8 different types. The cherry blossoms will be illuminated at night from 6:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. during the Cherry Blossom Festival (March 21st to April 14th, 2024). Around the pond, the cherry blossoms at night are illuminated using light and sound, creating a fantastical nighttime atmosphere that is completely different from the daytime.
Oike Park
Approximately 650 Somei Yoshino cherry trees were planted on the banks of the Sanagawa River that runs through the center of the city. During the blooming season in mid-March, a field of rape blossoms blooms under the approximately 4 km long row of cherry blossom trees, creating a vivid contrast between pink and yellow. In particular, the view from Kaiun Bridge next to the Aeon Toyokawa store is outstanding, and you can see the cherry blossoms and rape blossoms lining both banks of the river, as well as Mt. Hongu in front, making it a perfect photo spot. In 2024, the Toyokawa Cherry Blossom Festival was held from March 15th to April 7th, and the Sanagawa River embankment, Suwa Cherry Blossom Tunnel, and Mitsuyama Park were illuminated. Additionally, the Toyokawa Sakura Garden (Product Exhibition) will take place at Toyokawa Park from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on March 23rd, 24th, and March 29th to 31st.
Sanagawa Embankment
A lush park built on a hill overlooking the city. There are approximately 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees here, and during the blooming period, the Daisen Senbonzakura light-up event was held (March 23rd to April 7th in 2024). The cherry blossoms illuminated by the faint light of lanterns are full of elegance. Inside the park, there are lawns and benches here and there, so you can take a break and enjoy the cherry blossom viewing at night. Takahama City is also famous for producing tiles, and there are tile objects and a giant 5.2-meter-tall ceramic tube raccoon dog in the park, so be sure to check them out!
Oyama Ryokuchi Park
It has a vast site on the riverbed of the Kisogawa River and is dotted with a barbecue area, a lawn area, a baseball field, a golf course, and a cycling path. Next door is the Kisogawa National Government Park 138 Tower Park, which has an observation tower called Twin Arch 138 features two arches, each 138 meters high, and is a popular destination for citizens that is full of fun. It is also known as a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing, with the Kawazuzakura starting in early January, the Edohiganzakura and Kohiganzakura blooming from mid to late March, and the Satozakura blooming until early April, so you can enjoy cherry blossom viewing over a long period of time.
Ono Gokurakuji Park
This park was created by consolidating the cemeteries of 279 temples in the city on a hillside as part of the post-war land readjustment. Among the tombstones are the graves of famous people, and you can often see people visiting the tombstones of cultural figures. The park is full of nature and is full of fun, such as strolling through Metasequoia Square and the eucalyptus forest, and fishing at Nekogado Pond. There is a "Cherry Blossom Garden" in one corner of the park, where you can see approximately 1,500 cherry blossom trees, mainly Somei Yoshino. At the Aqua Tower on the north side of the park, you can also enjoy the rare experience of looking down on the cherry blossoms from an observation deck 40 meters above ground.
Heiwa Park
A park located across the Gojogawa River from Kiyosu Castle. It is known as a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing, and from around mid-March the Higanzakura blooms, followed by the Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, and the area is crowded with many cherry blossom viewing visitors. There is a bronze statue of Nobunaga Oda and his legal wife Nohime in the park, so it is also popular as a power spot for marital harmony and love. There are many cherry blossom viewing spots in the area, including Kiyosu Castle Ruins Park, Kiyosu Castle, and the rows of cherry blossom trees on both banks of the Gojogawa River, and the entire area turns pink in spring. Every year, the cherry blossom festival includes night cherry blossom lanterns, street stalls, and various other events.
Kiyosu Park
It started when the lord of Shinshiro Castle had cherry blossoms planted at a scenic spot in Toyokawa that was originally called "Kasaiwa." After that, the number of cherry blossoms increased, and before you knew it, it became a famous spot called "Sakurabuchi." Currently, a park has been developed along the Sakurabuchi Valley where an emerald green river flows, and when approximately 2,000 cherry blossom trees bloom in late March, many visitors come to see the cherry blossoms. The Shinshiro Sakura Festival is also held during the blooming period (March 20th to April 4th 2024). You can enjoy product exhibitions, stalls, and events.
Sakurabuchi Park
There are approximately 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees that decorate the area around Mukoyama Oike Pond, and they bloom beautifully in late March. There is also a plum orchard where you can enjoy the scenery of each season, with plum blossoms in early spring, azaleas in early summer, and autumn leaves in autumn. A bridge is built in the center of the pond, and you can cross it while admiring the waterside plants and fountain inside the pond. There is also a corner with Egyptian pyramids, sphinxes, and camel objects, making it a great place to take unique photos.
Mukaiyama Green Space
This is a rare spot in Japan where Nikkogawa River Sakura Zutsumi, Sugatanigawa Sakurazutsumi, and Nikkogawa River Sakura Zutsumi Small Park are connected by rows of cherry blossom trees like a necklace. The total length is 2.8 km, and 1,400 cherry trees of approximately 60 different types are planted. It is also attractive that you can admire the flowers for a long time, from the Gion Weeping Cherry Blossoms from mid-to-late March to the Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms from late March to early April and the Nara Double Cherry Blossoms from late April. The annual illumination was held from March 29 to April 6th, 2024, and you can also enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms at night.
Cherry Blossom Necklace
The Yamazakigawa River, which flows through the center of Mizuho Ward, is a popular place for residents to relax and enjoy the view of the cool water, and in some places, you can go down to the riverbank. Approximately 600 cherry blossom trees line both river banks, which stretches approximately 2.5 km from Ishikawa Bridge to Ochiai Bridge, and has been selected as one of the "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots." In mid- or late March, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the approximately 120 m stretches between Kanae Bridge and Kanae Kobashi is illuminated, and the area is crowded with many cherry blossom-viewing visitors.
