Trivia: Toyama spends more at sushi restaurants per household than any other city in Japan!

Toyama City, the capital of Toyama Prefecture, occupies about a third of the prefecture’s area spanning from its core to its southeastern border. To the east of the city is the Tateyama Mountains, a range of 3,000 meter-class peaks. To its north is Toyama Bay, fed by meltwater from these same mountains. The bay is often called “nature’s fish tank” for the abundant fishery resources with which it blesses the city. The city, which styles itself as “Sushi City Toyama,” is working to popularize its nigiri sushi and masuzushi, a local style of pressed sushi made with trout. Toyama was also selected by the New York Times for its list of 52 Places to Go in 2025, putting a global spotlight on the city. The surrounding area also has an abundance of appealing tourism and food destinations, making it the perfect gateway to the Noto Peninsula, which is still recovering from the 2024 earthquake and heavy rain disasters.
